There is a rose bush at Starfall Ranch that Alejandro has never quite been able to resist. On a warm afternoon, with the valley green behind him and the oaks dappled in summer light, he rests his chest against the fence rail and reaches down — lips slightly parted, entirely focused — toward the cascade of white roses blooming just below. He knows he is not supposed to. He does it anyway.
